Smart, clean-lined kitchen with scullery occupies the most unlikely of settings
Contemporary, efficient and backed by a generous scullery, it’s hard to believe that this kitchen inhabits what was once a garage space
Kitchens are often designed to occupy reworked or newly combined spaces. However this smart, clean-lined kitchen with scullery by designer Damian Hannah repurposes the most unlikely of settings.
“The owners were renovating an old convent and had earmarked the existing double garage for the new kitchen,” says Hannah.
“The space had one window at the rear and a back door but, of course, this meant there was little natural light coming into the garage space.”
To address this, the existing ceiling was removed to accentuate the pitched roof, and skylights were introduced.
“The main kitchen has a perfectly symmetrical layout facing new bifold doors that open directly to the outdoor front yard area. To define the kitchen within the now lofty space, a bulkhead was introduced – this houses the ducting, venting and lighting for the kitchen.”

Also in pursuit of a light aesthetic, the cabinetry and wall colours were specified in a pale tone to reflect as much light as possible around the room.
The kitchen’s hardwearing and ultra compact Dekton benchtops were specified in a natural marble pattern to add some texture and depth to the space. Similarly, a natural timber flooring was chosen to brighten up the kitchen area and to add warmth to the palette.
As there was plenty of depth to the space, the designer was able to introduce a separate scullery at the rear of the kitchen. This allowed for additional worksurfaces, tall storage and a handy broom cupboard and coat cupboard near the back door.
“Given the size of the scullery – largely tucked out of sight from the main kitchen and breakfast bar – I was able to include a second sink, a second dishwasher and a dedicated preparation pantry area.
“As the rear scullery space was quite long and narrow, I introduced a custom glass wall with sliding door to separate off the food storage area.”

This transparent addition allowed for an open and easy flow from the kitchen to the back door, while at the same time achieving a climate controlled scullery.
